Elements of Military Art and Science Military Tactics, Strategy, Art and Science to 1865 H. Wager Halleck It is true that no act of society can make it our duty to violate any command of God but is the above command to be taken literally, and as forbidding us to engage in just war? Is it not rather intended to impress upon us, in a forcible manner, that mutual love is a great virtue; that we should hate no one, not even a stranger nor an enemy, but should treat all with justice, mercy, and loving-kindness? If the meaning attempted to be given to this command in the above quotation be the true one, it is antagonistical not only to just war, but to civil justice, to patriotism, and to the social and domestic affections. But are we bound to love all human beings alike; that is, to the same degree? Does the Bible, as a whole, inculcate such doctrine? On the contrary, Christ himself had his beloved disciple,—one whom he loved pre-eminently, and above all the others; though he loved the others none the less on that account. We are bound to love our parents, our brothers, our families first, and above all other human beings; but we do not, for this reason, love others any the less. A man is not only permitted to seek first the comfort and happiness of his own family, but if he neglect to do so, he is worse than an infidel. We are bound to protect our families against the attacks of others; and, if necessary for the defence of their lives, we are permitted to take the life of the assailant; nay more, we are bound to do so. But it does not follow that we hate him whom we thus destroy. On the contrary, we may feel compassion, and even love for him. The magistrate sentences the murderer to suffer the penalty of the law; and the sheriff carries the sentence into execution by taking, in due form, the life of the prisoner nevertheless, both the magistrate and the sheriff may have the kindest feelings towards him whom they thus deprive of life.

Elements of Military Art and Science Military Tactics Strategy Art and Science to 1865 The Art of War H Wager Halleck 9781545043288 Books

Kind of old approaches to military thought from the Napoleonic era but
OK as a historical piece.

Elements of Military Art and Science Military Tactics Strategy Art and Science to 1865 The Art of War H Wager Halleck 9781545043288 Books Reviews

I more like it as a look into mindsets of the past than useful information.
The book was kind of dull I expected it to be more incite full about this period from a military point of view.
I keep scroliing thru this yawner to find some actual strategy and tactics, but the oratorical style rolls on and on like a coming thunderstorm. If it were a paper book, I could flip back and forth to find a chapter- - or even a mention--on what I want. The style is flowery, almost painterly, in building up a view of the author's subjects. It seems he has read Plato's dialogs and so the Q and A paragraphs go on and on and on and on . . . . . I am sure that the reader of the time found it edifying. But I keep wishing for a mental mute button- - or to find a way to fast-forward to see how a battle plan is laid out. I have read four percent of the book, by the scale at the bottom of the page - - -and am still in the introduction - -the "Whys" of modern warfare. Just dealing with Pacifists and Quakers cures insomnia. I am sure that General Patton loved it, tho'. I may keep it available in my as an artifact. . . Or I may just delete it. As an artifact of the time, I can only say that the author is no Lincoln. By that standard, I may toss it.
While the book might be of use to the military historian, the average person will likely find it boring and useless. Personally, I don't mind military history, but found the book to be more of a general course outline rather than hard data.
This seemed more like preaching and not teaching about Military Art and Science. There are a lot of references to examples, but the details of the examples are either non-existent or very light. I was hoping for a little more analysis of the good, the bad and the ugly about the example campaigns and why it worked or failed as referenced to each subject line.
Very well defined military tactics and defenses written in a language and style that is easily understood by non-military person such as myself. Clearly defined scenarios and examples. Recommend this book to understand terms and conditions faced by the men and women in service.
Great historical review
